Buying a Goat from Krebs Dairy Goats:
Reservations or Notification List:
To preorder goats, you may either place a reservation or get on our notification list:
Reservations
Customers who have placed a deposit to reserve a goat or goats get first chance at the goat(s) they have reserved before the goats are offered to other customers. Once we have contacted you to let you know that a goat you reserved is available, please respond within 24 hours to confirm that you want it (after that time has elapsed, we will offer the goat to other customers). Deposits are nonrefundable, unless we are unable to provide the desired goat, in which case the deposit will be fully refunded, or transferred to another goat, as you prefer. If you would like to reserve a goat, we request a deposit per goat reserved of
Wether Kids . . . . . . . . . $ 50
Doe Kids . . . . . . . . . . . . $ 100
Buck Kids . . . . . . . . . . . $ 100
Adult Does . . . . . . . . . . $ 100
Adult Bucks . . . . . . . . . $ 100
Note that we often give preference to individuals who reserve bottle wethers (versus weaned wethers) because sending the wether kids off as bottle babies helps take the pressure off moms who have large litters to feed. We also reserve the right to place goats in homes we feel are best for them.
Notification List
Customers may also be placed on our notification list for doelings, bucklings, does, or bucks free of charge (the notification option is not available for wethers). If you are on the notification list, we will notify you when/if the goat(s) you are interested in become available, but the goat(s) will be offered to other customers at the same time. For this reason, please specify the fastest way of getting in touch with you. The first customer to confirm that they want the goat, can pick it up in a timely manner, and place a half-down deposit, will get the goat. We do not hold goats unless we receive a deposit. Note that customers who have placed a deposit to reserve a goat get preference over customers on the notification list.
Once you have agreed to purchase a specific goat:
A nonrefundable half-down deposit is required to hold the goat until the agreed-upon pick-up date (a reservation deposit is counted into the 1/2 down deposit to hold until pick up), with the final half and any vet/disease testing/etc. costs due upon pick up. We will not hold the goat if the deposit is not received. If, after finalizing their reservation for a goat, a customer chooses to switch their reservation to a different goat, we reserve the right to charge, at our discretion, a remarketing fee of 10% the price of the original goat, since we took it off the market and invested in its care and housing under the impression that it was sold (this is not applicable to the reservation of unborn kids).
Information we need from you:
- Email address and/or phone number. Also let us know if calling, texting, or emailing is a faster way of getting in touch.
- If you are purchasing registered goats, we need your name or farm name and your full address in order to officially transfer the goats to your ownership with the registry organizations.
- If you are in a state other than Montana, or if you will have a professional transporter bring the goats to your location, we need your full address (which the vet requires to issue a health certificate).
- If you are from out of the area, your general plan regarding how you will transport the goat(s) to your location (see transport options below). Will you pick up the goats yourself, or will you hire a transporter?
- Specify which goat(s) you would like to reserve, which parent(s) would you like to reserve a kid from, and/or which qualities you are looking for (specify gender, if any).
- If you are just getting into goats, please let us know. If you are an established farm reserving doe kids, buck kids, adult does, or adult bucks, please provide information about your farm, including: Do you show, milk test, and/or linear appraise your goats?
Payments:
We accept PayPal, checks, or money orders (or cash if you are able to drop it off at the farm). All monies received are nonrefundable, unless the seller is unable to provide the goat(s), in which case monies will be fully refunded or transferred to another goat, as the buyer wishes. If the monies are transferred to another goat, they become nonrefundable unless the seller is unable to provide the goat for some reason. Sales are final. We do not accept returns or exchanges because of our farm biosecurity policy. Deposits must be used within 18 months of placement, unless otherwise agreed to or unless the seller is unable to fill a reservation prior to the expiration of that time. Offers of refund or replacement also expire after 18 months of when first offered by the seller.
Pick Up & Transportation:
Buyers are welcome to pick up their goats at our farm (we do not offer farm tours for biosecurity reasons). We are located in Western Montana. Responsible nationwide ground transportation is available (excluding Alaska and Hawaii). Please Contact us for a current list of transporters. The buyer is solely responsible for travel and vet expenses, including but not limited to veterinary fees, disease testing, health certificates, crates, etc.
All Goats must be picked up by the date agreed upon. The seller is not required to hold them after that. Care costs may apply for holding certain goats, or for holding goats past the original pick-up date. Unless otherwise agreed upon at the time of sale, if a bred doe is left at our farm until she gives birth, we have the ownership of the kids to retain or sell as we choose.
What comes with your goat:
- All doe kids, buck kids, adult does, and adult bucks intended for breeding/showing/etc. are registered with the American Dairy Goat Association and the American Goat Society (unless the customer requests otherwise). Wethers may be registered with the American Goat Society for an additional $ 25 per wether (this is by special request only). Any goat (besides wethers) sold without papers will be specifically noted as unregistered in the sales listing.
- Registered Krebs Farm goats will have their registry-required ID ear tattoos. We also ID tattoo unregistered goats (such as wethers) by special request (if they are stolen, it is easier to recover goats with ID tattoos).
- Kids are routinely disbudded (unless, of course, they are polled--i.e., naturally hornless). If you pick up the kid(s) before they are old enough to disbud and you are in our area, we can give you the contact information of a good person for disbudding to take the kids to when they are ready (otherwise, if you don't disbud goats yourself, find a good disbudder through your local 4-H, FFA, or dairy goat clubs, or an experienced goat vet). If you want your goat to have horns, you must tell us and pay for the goat in full within 5 days of the goat's birth. All monies received for horned kids are nonrefundable, because there isn't a large market for horned dairy goats. Before you decide to keep the horns on your goats, please be aware of the pros and cons of doing so.
- All goats of sufficient age to need it are sent to their new homes up-to-date on maintenance such as hoof trimming, worming, coccidiosis prevention, or delousing.
- We will have all registered bucklings born on our farm on or after January 1, 2024, DNA tested per ADGA's new requirements. (Bucks born on or after January 1, 2024, must have their DNA on file in order to register their progeny with ADGA.) Please see "DNA Testing" below (point #3 under Guarantees & Further Info) for more details.
- We are happy to have the goats vet checked or tested for diseases prior to sale, at the buyer's expense. To ensure they are in good health before crossing state lines, goats going out of state must be inspected by a vet and receive a certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI). Additional disease testing is also required in some states.
Rights Reserved by Krebs Dairy Goats:
We reserve the right to retain any kid born on our farm. We reserve the right to raise or lower the pricing of kids once they are born based on their individual qualities and those of their ancestors. We reserve the right to place goats in the homes where we feel they will be most happy and productive. We reserve the right to cancel a sale at any time for any reason, with a full refund of any monies received (unless the customer did not pick up the goat when agreed, did not pay as required, or otherwise failed to uphold their end of the sales agreement). We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone who: 1) We feel will not provide a good environment or proper care for animals. 2) Is unreasonable, threatening, debasing, harassing, argumentative, malicious, behaves suspiciously, is dishonest, has a track record of excessive vacillation, fails to uphold their end of a sales or breeding contract, or tries to circumvent Krebs Dairy Goats' sales policies and guarantees. 3) Will not provide us with information we request for the purpose of sale and/or transportation. 4) Will not pay.
Guarantees & Further Info:
1. General Health: Our herd is tested free of the goat diseases CAE, CL, and Johne's (see Herd Health for more details). All goats leave our farm in good health to the best of our knowledge, but due to moving stress, etc., we do not guarantee health after the goats leave our farm. We will gladly have the goats vet checked and/or disease tested prior to sale for the buyer's benefit or to comply with state import regulations, at the buyer's expense. Please note that goats under six months old cannot be tested for CAE, CL, Johne's, or other diseases because of the potential inaccuracy of a test conducted at that age (in these cases we can test the parents at the buyer's expense, if desired). All monies received for vet checking or disease testing are nonrefundable. It is the buyer's responsibly to know their state's animal health laws and make arrangements accordingly. We are not responsible for infringements of animal health laws. We are not responsible for disease or injury incurred during transportation or any time after the goat leaves our hands.
2. Defects, Faults, & Injuries: Before they are registered, all kids are inspected to ensure that they are free of very serious or disqualifying hereditary defects* and are evaluated for their fitness to be registered and used to perpetuate and promote the Nigerian breed. (For a dissertation on our breeding philosophy, please refer to our article "Baby Nigerian Dwarf Goats for Sale! Striving for Excellence in Breeding Nigerian Dwarf Goats" published in the March/April 2022 issue of Goat Journal.) We do not sell goats as registered or registerable if they are unregistrable, unbreedable, or unshowable due to very serious or disqualifying hereditary defects present at the time of sale (excepting goats that are over height, as this is not a health or functionality issue -- continue reading for more info). Registered goats that, at the time of sale, are over height or have a very serious or disqualifying defect that is nonhereditary (such as one caused by injury) are sold with full disclosure of these issues. We are not responsible for any such defects, faults, or injuries that arise after sale or that are impossible to evaluate at the time of sale (such as udder structure and functionality of doe kids). We do not guarantee the adult height of kids and goats that aren't fully grown (4 years old or older). There are no guarantees on goats sold unregistered or without papers. We do not knowingly sell without disclosure any registered goat with very serious or disqualifying defects, but we are not responsible for faults, defects, or injuries discovered post sale in goats that are not registered with both our herd name (Krebs) and herd tattoos and were born on our farm. We do not guarantee anything regarding kids produced from a doe that was sold bred, nor do we guarantee anything regarding the progeny produced by goats purchased from us.
In cases where this guarantee applies, a licensed veterinarian's, licensed ADGA or AGS judge's, or, in cases where applicable, another qualified professional's statement confirming the problem is required to receive a refund. At no time will the refund exceed the original purchase price of the goat (refunds do not include the cost of veterinary services, lab work, transportation, etc.), and we are not responsible for the placement of the goat if the buyer does not desire to keep it. No returns or exchanges accepted.
* See the ADGA Guidebook for the definition of "very serious" and "disqualifying" defects.
3. DNA Testing: ADGA Buck DNA Requirements: The American Dairy Goat Association now requires that all bucks born on or after January 1, 2024, must have DNA on file before their progeny can be registered with ADGA. This necessitates that a hair sample from the buck is submitted to the lab for DNA typing. Krebs Dairy Goats takes responsibility to submit the hair sample for DNA typing for bucks born on our farm. Generally, the cost of DNA typing will be included in the price of the buck and will not be an extra cost to the purchaser unless we specify otherwise. The hair sample will be submitted only after the buck has been paid for in full in order to minimize extra expenses for us.
Note that DNA typing is not required prior to the registration of the buck himself, but he must have DNA on file before his progeny can be registered. ADGA only requires individual typing of the buck, and not parent verification. However, parent verification will be automatically completed on any buck whose parent(s) already have DNA on file. ADGA does NOT require a buck born before January 1, 2024, to have DNA on file for progeny registration.
The American Goat Society does NOT require bucks to have DNA on file in order to register progeny. Due to this, we offer a $ 50 discount on bucklings if the customer wants only AGS registration, as it reduces our expenses involved in DNA typing that buckling. However, if the buckling leaves our farm with only AGS registration, we will not necessarily be able to provide ADGA registration if it is desired at a future date.
All other DNA testing besides individual typing of a buck born on or after January 1, 2024, as described above: If desired by the customer, we are happy to have any goat and/or its parents (if available for testing) DNA tested, at the customer's expense. This includes any extra DNA tests (such as Alpha s1 Casein) on bucks. Note that all monies received for customer-requested DNA typing are nonrefundable.
4. Doe Fertility: We do not guarantee the fertility of does unless the goat was sold registered with our herd name and herd tattoos and was born on our farm but is clearly a hermaphrodite or freemartin. This must be reported to us prior to the goat reaching two years old, and a licensed veterinarian's statement confirming that the goat is a hermaphrodite or freemartin is required to receive a refund. At no time will the refund exceed the original purchase price of the goat (refunds do not include the cost of veterinary services, lab work, transportation, etc.), and we are not responsible for the placement of the goat if the buyer does not desire to keep it. No returns or exchanges accepted.
5. Buck Fertility: We guarantee the fertility of homebred registered bucks when they have reached at least one year old but left our farm no more than 18 months prior to the first live service. Buck infertility must be reported within 60 days of the first time he was used for live service after turning one year old. This guarantee does not apply and no refund will be issued for any of the following reasons: 1) the buck successfully serviced does post sale, prior to the unsuccessful servicing; 2) the buck was neglected or received insufficient nutrition and/or care of any kind; 3) infertility was due to an injury or disease incurred post sale; 4) the buck was 6 years old or older at the date of sale; 5) we specifically state prior to sale that we do not guarantee fertility; 6) the buck is not registered with our herd name and tattoos; 7) the buck was not born on our farm. A licensed veterinarian's (or other qualified professional's) statement confirming that the animal is infertile but otherwise in good health is required to receive a refund. At no time will the refund exceed the original purchase price of the goat (refunds do not include the cost of veterinary services, lab work, transportation, etc.), and we are not responsible for the placement of the goat if the buyer does not desire to keep it. No returns or exchanges accepted.
6. Does Sold Bred & Their Offspring: Does sold as bred are not guaranteed to be pregnant; just that they were exposed to a buck for normal servicing. We can pregnancy test or have them ultrasounded to confirm pregnancy if the customer wishes, at the customer's expense. At no time are we responsible for problems experienced in a doe's pregnancy or delivery or with any resulting kids. Unless otherwise agreed upon at the time of sale, if a doe is reserved when pregnant but is left at our farm until she gives birth, we have the ownership of the kids to retain or sell as we choose. The kids produced from does sold as bred will be registered with our herd name, unless their mother was paid for in full prior to breeding, and the buyer requests that the mother's date of sale is listed as the date of payment (rather than the date of pick up); however, we reserve the right to refuse this. When the kids are to be registered under our herd name and/or are sired by our bucks, the original buyer or any subsequent owners are expected to honor our instructions regarding kid naming, sire initials, or doeling-registration-limited service memos and/or contracts.
7. Temperament: We do not guarantee that any goat will have a good temperament, though we try to give an honest representation of their temperaments to buyers. We tame our kids and train them to have good manners with humans. Goats, however, have minds of their own sometimes, accidents can happen, and we have no control over how animals are treated and handled after they leave our farm. Therefore, we are not responsible for any human, animal, or property injuries that are caused directly or indirectly by goats purchased from us. Nor are we responsible for a buyer's dissatisfaction with a goat's personality or behavior.
8. Requirements to Receive Refunds: To receive a refund (or replacement) for any reason, the goat's authentic ADGA and AGS registration paperwork must be signed over and returned to us. We will issue the refund upon receiving the paperwork. Refunds do not include the monies, if any, paid to vets, laboratories, transporters, etc., for the purposes of health exams and certification, disease testing, transportation, transportation supplies, etc. We are not responsible for any costs incurred by the buyer after purchasing the goat. Offers of refund or replacement expire after 18 months of when first offered by the seller.
9. Replacements: A replacement goat, versus a refund, will be offered at the seller's discretion only. Only the original purchase price of the goat to be replaced will be credited toward a replacement. We will refund the difference if the replacement is priced lower than the original, or the buyer must pay the difference if the replacement is priced higher than the original, as the case may dictate. The buyer is responsible for any veterinary or transportation expenses necessary to get a replacement goat to their location. Offers of refund or replacement expire after 18 months of when first offered by the seller.
10. Lost Paperwork: When a goat is sold accompanied by registration paperwork and/or service memos and these items of paperwork are lost by the buyer, the fee for us to replace them is $ 10 per service memo or bill of sale and $ 25 per registration certificate. Service memo replacement is only available if the information needed to fill them out is still available to us in an accurate form. We cannot replace registration certificates if the goat has already been officially transferred by the registries into the buyer's ownership (the buyer must contact the registries in that case). We do not, however, guarantee that we will be able to replace lost paperwork items.
In most cases, we are unable to help you with lost, missing, or incorrect paperwork if you purchased, from another farm, goats we bred or owned at some point, as we no longer have ownership of those goats and, therefore, do not have the authority to request new papers from the registries or issue you any paperwork. If you purchased, from another farm, kids that were produced from a bred doe we sold to that farm, we cannot help you with lost, missing, or incorrect paperwork. In either of these situations, you need to contact the farm you purchased the goats from to get these problems resolved.
11. Applicability of Guarantees: The goat must be purchased directly from Krebs Farm for any guarantee listed above to apply. We do not guarantee anything regarding goats that were not purchased directly from us. The guarantees do not apply if you sell the goat and then purchase it back, or if it was returned to you.
12. Guarantee Disclaimer: Besides any guarantees specifically listed above, there are no guarantees or warrantees whatsoever. At No Time Will a Refund Exceed the Original Purchase Price of the Goat
