Herd Health
Our herd is tested free of the goat diseases CAE, CL, and Johne's. We also routinely test our milking does for brucellosis and Q-fever, all results negative. See records below.
The entire herd of adult goats was tested for CAE, CL, and Johne's disease in September, 2017, with all results negative (negative = disease free). Since sheep can transmit those diseases to goats, we also tested our entire sheep flock for OPP (the sheep version of CAE), CL, and Johne's disease in September, 2017, with all results negative. All goats and sheep randomly sample tested before and after that have been negative. We routinely test our milking does for brucellosis and Q-fever (all results negative). We have never gotten a positive result for any of those diseases, nor had any symptoms of them in our herd or flock.
Since the blood test for CL is fairly inaccurate, we also have a farm policy of testing unexplained abscesses to rule out CL. We have only had to do this once, and the test determined that the abscess had been caused by a standard infection from a wound, not CL.
We purchase goats and sheep only from disease-free herds/flocks. All new animals are isolated for a minimum of 30 days before being introduced to the existing herd/flock. Animals of sufficient age (6 months old or older) are tested for CAE/OPP, CL, and Johne's disease at least once before being introduced to the existing herd/flock. Animals coming from out-of-state receive their certificate of veterinary inspection before crossing state lines, per Montana regulations.
Our animals have no exposure to outside livestock. We do not show at this time or provide stud services. We purchase hay only from hayfields that are not fertilized with manure or used as winter pasture for other livestock. We do not allow anyone (ourselves, employees, and vets included) that has been exposed to other livestock to enter the animal facilities or touch the animals in order to prevent people inadvertently tracking in diseases on their footwear or clothes.
We will gladly have any animal vet checked and/or disease tested before sale at the customer's request or to comply with state import regulations, at the customer's expense. Note that animals under 6 months old cannot be disease tested because of the potentially inaccuracy of tests conducted at that young age, but we can test their parents if desired.
